Novel Editions is a Canadian subscription box for book lovers. Each month, Novel Editions sends a carefully curated box of bookish items. Expect to receive a fiction novel released in the last 6 months, 3-4 items that are relevant to the book, plus a note from the curator explaining why she chose the book. The founder, Alex, spends a great deal of time each month curating the perfect box to bring joy to subscribers, and I have to say, she always knocks it out of the park. I've never been disappointed with a Novel Editions box.

The April theme is "Leading Ladies" and the box includes items inspired by famous literary women.

First look - everything unboxed.

First Edition Tea Co. Literary Tea Collection (2 x 10g bags, $7.10)
We received Alice in Wonderland, which is a blend of rose & marzipan in a rooibos black tea base, and Jane Eyre, which is a currant and spice black tea. First Edition Tea Co. is based in Toronto. Their gift tins are so pretty!

Literary Inspired Mug (~$10)
Where there's tea, there's a mug! This mug features a wonderful quote from Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. "I'd rather take coffee than compliments just now". Of course a box focusing on literary leading ladies would include an homage to Little Women!

CarrotTopPaperShop Literary Bookmarks (3, $17.04)
I received Laura Ingalls Wilder, Anne of Green Gables, Jo March from Little Women. CarrotTopPaperShop's motto is "be the heroine of your life". They create literary inspired art prints, focusing on female characters. I love this print, inspired by Pride & Prejudice. We also received a promo card offering a free 5x7 print with a $15 minimum order (although it seems like all customers can get this deal).

Now for the book! Alex described it as a historical fiction, following a group of women during the start of WWII. Let's check it out...

The Chilbury Ladies' Choir by Jennifer Ryan (Hardcover, $33)

As England becomes enmeshed in the early days of World War II and the men are away fighting, the women of Chilbury village forge an uncommon bond. They defy the Vicar’s stuffy edict to close the choir and instead “carry on singing,” resurrecting themselves as the Chilbury Ladies’ Choir. We come to know the home-front struggles of five unforgettable choir members: a timid widow devastated when her only son goes to fight; the older daughter of a local scion drawn to a mysterious artist; her younger sister pining over an impossible crush; a Jewish refugee from Czechoslovakia hiding a family secret; and a conniving midwife plotting to outrun her seedy past.

An enchanting ensemble story that shuttles from village intrigue to romance to the heartbreaking matters of life and death, Jennifer Ryan’s debut novel thrillingly illuminates the true strength of the women on the home front in a village of indomitable spirit.

The Chilbury Ladies' Choir was released in February 2017. Flipping through the book I see it's written in "epistolary" style, telling the story through diary entries and letters. I don't typically like this style, but the write up sounds really intriguing. I love stories set in this era, so I'm looking forward getting into it. When I read the publisher write up, another WWII era historical fiction came to mind - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Let's hope this one is just as good!

The May Novel Editions box included a recently released hardcover novel, plus three related bookish items. The retail value this month is over $67 Canadian. Alex picked some fantastic items to suit the Leading Ladies theme. I can't wait to brew a cup of tea and get started with the book!

  2. I read The Chilbury Ladies' Choir and really enjoyed it. Each chapter starts off as a diary entry or letter, but as you read the letter/diary it becomes more straight narrative rather than a letter or a diary entry. You might like it more than you expect. I love stories set during WWII. The novel is a slice of life in a small town during the second world war. I hope you enjoy reading it. It's one of my favourites of the year.
